During Arcega’s visit to CSUC he will create a large-scale sculpture project in Ayres Hall B-So gallery space. His pieces are labor intensive and usually require many hands to build. Groups of students will work closely with him on the execution of the sculpture project.
A note from the artist:
“So the idea of the project was inspired by these things called Diversion Safes. I just wrote a paper about their social and domestic significance. The initial confrontation of the Chico project will be boring, two stacks of wood on furniture dollies. They are actually hollow in the center. the interior will be lined with maroon velvet-like fabric. I’m starting to shy away from immediately describing them as coffins. Rather, they are meant to conceal humans. I was thinking a lot about the concealment of labor in the marxist fetish sense- but also, in the undocumented labor sense. This also speaks toward globalization, and the division of labor in the global sense. The Mariana Islands for instance is a US territory, but most of us have never heard of it. Anything made there can be stamped with “Made in the USA.” It’s in the Pacific, very near cheap labor.”
Michael Arcega is an interdisciplinary artist working primarily in
sculpture and installations. His art, though visual, revolves largely
around language. He is interested in using comedic formats and
tactics to express darker global issues. He received his BFA in
Interdisciplinary studies at the San Francisco Art Institute and is
currently working towards his MFA at Stanford University.

9.30am Mike Arcega and students set up and begin work in B-So gallery space (and possibly the art shop). Continue to work all day on project “Built For Life: Secret Death”.
5.30-6.30pm AYRES 106. Arcega’s lecture on his work.

8.30am Continue working in the B-So space
2.00-5.00pm Graduate studio. Potluck lunch. Discussions with
students about their work. There is a sign up sheet
posted in the graduate studio.
5.00-6.00pm Meet with Graduate Seminar class.

8.30am Continue working all day to finish project.
5.00-7.00pm Reception for the artist in the B-So gallery

the particulars are:
WHAT and WHERE – An ongoing sculpture project in the BFA galley, officially known as the B-SO Space – between the Stairs and the Office Gallery in Ayers Hall.
WHEN – MARCH 25-27 The week after Spring Break. Tuesday-Thursday to be exact. Don’t space it. This is an all day event, so come between classes and pick up a tool, or a camera, bring a pizza, some water, ask what needs to be done. Take off when it is time to go to class, come back later if you can.
starts 11:00am Tuesday morning. Bring your lunch, go in with others and buy a pizza, send a minion out for sandwiches, whatever. let’s just make the best of the limited time that a lot of us have available.
